Oxytetracycline HCL

Description

Oxytetracycline is primarily bacteriostatic antibiotic of the Tetracycline family. It is thought to exert its anti-microbial effect by the inhibition of protein synthesis. It is active against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive organisms.

Uses

  • Wounds
  • Skin infections
  • Respiratory infections
  • Mycoplasma

Dosage

  • 0.4 mg/ml in drinking water (20)
  • 10-20 mg/kg orally, three times a day (20)
  • 60-100 mg/kg intramuscular injection or ordinary injection - three day long acting preparation (27)

Side Effects

  • Loss of appetite
  • Itching
  • Anaphylaxis

Warnings

  • Should not be used for streptococcal disease, as many strep strains are resistant to Tetracycline drugs.
  • Not the drug of choice in the treatment of any type of staphylococcal infections.
  • Do not give with any dairy products.
  • Do not give to rats with kidney problems
