Description
A white, crystalline powder, it is a wide-spectrum semi-synthetic systemic aminoglycoside antibiotic developed from Kanamycin. It has the broadest spectrum of activity of the aminoglycosides. used in the treatment of infections, esp. those caused by certain types of bacteria. Has the broadest spectrum of activity of the aminoglycosides. Can be expensive and is available via prescription only.
Uses
- Bacterial tract infections
- Bacteraemia or Septicaemia
- Bone and joint infections
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Salmonella
- Some Streptococcus
- Staphylococcus
Dosage
- 5 mg/lb two or three times daily, by injection, for 7 to 14 days (7)
- 2-5 mg/kg by injection every 8-12 hours (20)
Side Effects
- Lethargy
- Neuromuscular blockade
- Facial edema
- Pain/inflammation at injection site (mild)
- Loss of hearing
- Kidney damage
Warnings
May cause kidney damage, so encourage you rat to drink as much water as possible. Watch for loss of balance.
Incompatibilities
Do not use with other aminoglycosides.
