Description

From the macrolide group of antibiotics, it is active primarily against gram-positive bacteria, like Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, including many that are resistant to penicillins.

Erythromycin is effective only against rapidly dividing bacteria.

Uses

  • Streptococcus
  • Staphylococcus
  • Mild respiratory infections

Dosage

  • 5 to 10mg/lb orally, three times a day (7)
  • Ornacyn - 1/2 to 1 tablet in 2oz. water mixed fresh daily (7)
  • Ornacyn - 1/8 tablet mixed in food three times a day (7)
  • 20 mg/kg orally (20)

Side Effects

  • Anorexia
  • Diarrhoea
  • Itching

Warnings

A common side effect is gastrointestinal upset so it's probably best to use another antibiotic.

Incompatibilities

Chloramphenicol Palmitate, Chloramphenicol Sodium Succinate, Theophylline (may increase toxicity).
